Incubator Units, Altrincham Street, Manchester

 The Incubator Unit scheme for UMIST evolved out of a master-planning exercise by oea to create a new entrance to the university back in 1998.

The new structure is visually and physically separated from the viaduct and the space created is heavily glazed to admit natural light and maintain views through the arches.

The entrances are off Altrincham Street across galvanised steel slatted bridges to an oak door, above an illuminated gravel-filled trench, protecting the entrance from vehicles.
