New-build extension to the Grade II listed Express Buildings by Sir Owen Williams built in 1939 to provide 46 live/work apartments over five storeys and 2000 m² of ‘fast wired’ office space. The design retained and extended an existing steel frame, and employed a simple palette of silver stainless steel, galvanized steel, pre-weathered zinc, powder-coated aluminium windows and black ceramic tiles. The matt silver stainless steel cladding contrasts but subtly compliments the gloss black plexiglass cladding of the adjacent listed building.
