Career
Gary spent his year out in 1982 at Dennis Page Architects, Oxford concentrating on housing developments and
competed his professional training at Manchester City Council City Architects in the Housing Modifications team fro
1985-87. This was followed by 8 years as a senior architect at Manchester based Downs and Variava building 3 Halls of
Residence before establishing O’Connell East in 1995.
Gary is involved in all aspects of running the company and in particular overseeing the design and quality control of
schemes from inception to completion and managing all aspects of client liaison during the process.
Recent Contract Experience - see attached project sheets
- Victoria Hall, Wolverhampton, 657 en-suite student bedrooms with management suite, common rooms
and associated facilities together with outdoor MUGA. The development utilized a volumetric modular
system and currently stands as the tallest of it's type in Europe. Completed August 2009, £26.5m
- Polhill Campus, University of Bedfordshire, for Liberty Living PLC, 517 en suite student bedrooms in 4/5
bedroom flats, studios, management offices, common rooms and associated facilities. Planning submitted
November 2005, contract completed July 2007, £16.2m
- Incubator Units, UMIST, creation of incubator office spaces within existing railway arches, traditional
contract. Value £900k
- Holmes Wharf, Lincoln for Watkin Jones. 223 en suite bedroom student accommodation.
- Derby High School, Bury, alterations and extension carried out whilst school operational
